Chapter 1

Between Love and Duty

₩ The Assignment

Daniel Ross Callahan had learned a long time ago that the most dangerous decisions were often delivered quietly.

No raised voices or dramatic speeches. It was just a folder placed on a table.

The conference room at the FBI field office in Manhattan smelled faintly of burnt coffee and old carpet the scent of long nights and unfinished cases.

Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting pale reflections on the polished surface of the table.

Daniel sat with his hands folded in front of him, posture straight, expression neutral.

He had been called in early. Which meant one thing: something big was coming.

Across from him sat Agent Rebecca Hayes, his handler for the last three years. She was mid-forties, sharp-eyed, and relentless, Hayes had the reputation of someone who trusted evidence more than people.

Her dark hair was pulled into a tight bun, and her gaze carried the kind of calm that only came from years spent dismantling dangerous men.

Beside her leaned Tom Alvarez, the bureau’s surveillance specialist younger than Hayes but already tired in the way only intelligence work could make someone tired. Tom had a tablet open in front of him, fingers tapping quietly against the screen.

The third man in the room, Assistant Director Harold Whitaker, stood near the window overlooking the gray skyline of Manhattan.

That alone told Daniel how serious this was.

Assistant directors didn’t show up for routine assignments.

Whitaker turned slowly, his hands clasped behind his back.

“Agent Callahan,” he said. “You’ve been recommended for a deep-cover operation.”

Daniel didn’t react, he didn’t showed up but Inside, though, his instincts sharpened.

Deep cover meant disappearing.

Deep cover meant months… sometimes years. And sometimes it meant never coming back at all.

Hayes slid a thick folder across the table toward him.

“Take a look.”

Daniel opened it.

The first page held a photograph. An older man with silver hair and cold, intelligent eyes stared back at him.

Don Vittorio D’Angelo.

The name was familiar even to agents who had never worked organized crime.

Whitaker spoke again.

“The D’Angelo family is currently the second most powerful Italian crime organization operating in the United States.”

Daniel flipped the page.

Crime scene photos. Financial charts. Surveillance reports.

Illegal ports. Money laundering routes. Political connections.

Extortion rings stretching from New York to Miami.

The deeper he read, the darker it became.

“They’re careful,” Hayes added. “Smarter than most families we’ve dismantled. They don’t advertise their violence.”

Tom tapped the tablet and a map appeared on the screen.

Red dots lit up across several cities.

“Shipping routes,” Tom said. “Mostly through the eastern seaboard. Drugs, weapons, counterfeit pharmaceuticals. They move product cleaner than anyone else in the game.”

Daniel leaned back slightly in his chair.

“And you want me inside.”

Whitaker nodded once.

“Yes.”

Daniel kept flipping through the dossier. Page after page detailed the organization’s hierarchy.

Captains.

Soldiers.

Financial intermediaries.

Politicians who had quietly accepted donations that smelled like blood money.

At the center of it all stood Vittorio D’Angelo, a man who had ruled his empire for over thirty years without ever spending a night behind bars.

Daniel understood why the Bureau wanted him.

To take down a man like that, you needed more than surveillance.

You needed someone on the inside.

“Your cover identity will be Lorenzo Carbone,” Hayes said, sliding another file toward him.

Daniel opened it.

Driver’s license.

Financial history.

A criminal record carefully constructed to appear authentic.

“Arms trafficking in Sicily,” Hayes explained. “Small-time smuggling in Europe. Nothing big enough to attract federal attention, but enough to give you credibility.”

Daniel studied the identity. A different man stared back from the forged documents.

Someone harder....more dangerous.

Someone who belonged in the shadows.

He closed the folder slowly.

“How long?” he asked.

Whitaker answered without hesitation.

“As long as it takes.”

Daniel expected that. Still, the weight of those words settled in his chest.

Deep cover meant isolation.

No contact with friends and limited communication with the Bureau.

Every moment spent pretending to be someone else.

It also meant living among criminals who would kill him without hesitation if they discovered the truth.

A lott of risk...

“You’ll need to gain their trust,” Hayes said.

“That’s the hard part,” Daniel replied.

“No,” she corrected. “The hard part is staying alive once you do.”

Daniel almost smiled at that.... fair point.

Tom tapped his tablet again, and a new photograph appeared on the screen.

This time it wasn't a crime scene and neither one of Vittorio D'Angelo's captains.

It wasn't a surveillance photo of a suspected criminal, neither.

It was a young woman.

Daniel's eyes paused on the photograph.

Copper-red hair framed her face, falling softly over one shoulder. Thin-framed glasses rested on the bridge of her nose, giving her a quiet, intellectual appearance.

There was nothing intimidating about her. She looked thoughtful, almost distant, as if her mind were somewhere else entirely.

She looked more like someone who belonged in a university library than in the dossier of one of America's most powerful mafia families.

Daniel looked up from the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Hayes folded her hands on the table.

"Lucia D'Angelo."

"The Don's daughter?" Daniel asked.

Whitaker nodded once.

"His only child. Twenty-four years old."

Tom swiped to the next page of the file.

"She studies literature at Columbia University. She spends most of the year there and only returns to her father's estate during holidays or family events."

Daniel studied the photograph again before asking another question.

"Is she involved in the family business?"

The room fell quiet for a brief moment. Hayes and Whitaker exchanged a quick glance.

"We don't know," Hayes admitted.

Daniel frowned.

"You don't know?"

Whitaker stepped forward.

"We know she's Vittorio D'Angelo's daughter, but that's about all we're certain of. Some intelligence suggests her father has always kept her away from the organization's operations."

Tom shrugged slightly.

"Other reports suggest she's simply very good at staying out of sight."

"There isn't enough evidence to place her directly in any criminal activity," Hayes continued. "No financial records, no intercepted communications, no witness statements. She may know nothing... or she may know far more than we realize."

Daniel looked back at the photograph.

"So she could be completely innocent."

"It's possible," Whitaker replied. "It's also possible she's learned how to hide in plain sight. Until you're inside, we simply don't know."

Daniel slowly closed the file.

"So why are you showing me her picture?"

Whitaker's expression hardened.

"Because sooner or later, you'll probably meet her."

Hayes leaned forward.

"When that happens, remember this: your mission is Don Vittorio D'Angelo and his organization."

Whitaker finished the thought.

"Lucia D'Angelo is not your target. Don't let curiosity become a distraction."

Daniel nodded once.

"Understood."

He glanced at the photograph one last time before closing the folder.

Neither he nor anyone else in the room could have imagined that the quiet young woman in that photograph would one day become the one person capable of making him question everything he believed about duty, loyalty, and justice.

Chapter 2

Between Love and Duty

₩Becoming Lorenzo Carbone

Daniel Ross Callahan disappeared quietly. There was no ceremony and no farewell.

Just a series of signatures, sealed files, and a life that slowly stopped existing.

Within three days, the FBI database listed Agent Daniel Callahan as transferred to an international task force overseas.

Within a week, even that trail was buried and in its place, another man began to exist.

The first step was the mirror.

Daniel stood in a sterile training apartment inside a secured Bureau facility in Virginia, staring at his reflection.

His dark hair had been cut shorter, styled differently.A faint scar expertly applied makeup and prosthetics ran just under his jawline.

It was small but memorable.

Criminals remembered scars.

“Again,” came Agent Hayes’ voice from behind him.

Daniel inhaled slowly.
