To save her family from total financial ruin, Chloe Montgomery signed a cold, legally binding proxy marriage contract, tying herself to the elusive, shadowy heir of Sterling Global. She was promised a quiet life as a paper wife—a bride to a ghost husband who lived abroad and demanded nothing. Until a desperate, champagne-fueled night at a masked charity gala changes everything. Entangled in the arms of an dangerously handsome stranger in a penthouse suite, Chloe surrenders to a passion she never thought possible, only to slip away before dawn. Three weeks later, two pink lines shatter her world. But the real nightmare begins when her mysterious husband finally decides to step out of the shadows—and into her apartment. The ruthless CEO claiming her as his wife is none other than Damian Sterling: the stranger from the penthouse, and the biological father of her unborn child. Now forced into his fortress-like estate, Chloe must play the devoted bride while hiding her growing pregnancy from her ruthless husband. But in a house built on secrets and ambition, how long can she hide the truth from the man who controls her fate?

Chapter 1: The Paper Bride

The oppressive scent of damp paper, old oil paints, and cheap tobacco hung heavy in the dimly lit gallery. Outside, rain lashed relentlessly against the grime-streaked windows of Montgomery Fine Art, but inside, the air was suffocatingly still.

Chloe Montgomery stood behind the worn wooden counter, her pale knuckles turned white as she clutched the edge of a mahogany desk. Her eyes were fixed on the two men standing across from her—men whose expensive leather jackets and cold, unblinking eyes signaled danger far louder than any words could.

"Three hundred thousand dollars, Miss Montgomery," the larger man said, his voice a low, raspy drawl. He tapped a heavy gold ring against the glass display case. "Your father's signature is on the promissory note. The deadline passed at midnight. We aren't in the business of granting extensions."

"My father is in the hospital," Chloe said, keeping her voice as steady as humanly possible, though her heart pounded like a trapped bird against her ribs. "He suffered a heart attack two days ago because of the pressure you people put on him. The gallery's inventory is being appraised. Give us two weeks—"

"You don't have two hours," the man interrupted, leaning forward. The scent of cheap cologne mixed with stale rain blew across her face. "If Arthur Montgomery can't pay, the debt falls on his estate. And since this rundown art shop isn't worth thirty grand on a good day, we'll start taking payment in other ways. Your father has a lot of friends in high places who wouldn't want to see his daughter's life derailed, wouldn't you agree?"

A cold shiver raced down Chloe’s spine. The implicit threat hung in the air, heavy and lethal.

Before she could speak, the chime above the gallery door sounded, breaking the suffocating tension.

A sharp, crisp gust of rain-chilled air swept into the room, followed by the rhythmic, deliberate tap of expensive leather shoes on the hardwood floor.

A man in a impeccably tailored slate-grey suit stepped inside. He moved with a quiet, terrifying authority that instantly altered the room's energy. He held a black umbrella in one hand and a sleek leather briefcase in the other. Behind him stood two immaculate security guards who silently posted themselves at the door, blocking the exit.

The loan shark turned, his aggressive posture instantly collapsing into wary caution. "Who the hell are you?"

The man in the grey suit ignored him completely, his eyes sweeping across the dusty gallery before landing on Chloe. "Chloe Montgomery?"

"Yes," Chloe whispered, her brow furrowing. "Who are you?"

"My name is Julian Vance," the man replied smoothly, stepping toward the counter. "I am the senior legal counsel for the Sterling Global Conglomerate. I am here on behalf of my client."

The loan shark snorted, though he took an uneasy step back. "Sterling Global? What does a corporate giant want with a bankrupt art dealer?"

Julian didn't even glance at the loan shark. Instead, he snapped his fingers, and one of his assistants stepped forward, handing a thick envelope directly to the loan shark.

"Inside that envelope is a certified bank draft for three hundred and fifty thousand dollars," Julian said, his voice cool and clinical. "Three hundred thousand to cover Arthur Montgomery's debt in full, and fifty thousand as a retainer for your immediate, permanent disappearance. If you or any of your associates approach Miss Montgomery or her father again, the full weight of Sterling Global's legal and security apparatus will crush you. Am I understood?"

The loan shark opened the envelope, verified the draft, and swallowed hard. Without another word, he signaled his partner, and both men hurriedly brushed past the security guards and disappeared into the rainy night.

Chloe stood frozen behind the counter, her chest heaving as the sudden relief overwhelmed her senses. "You... you paid off his debt? Why? My father hasn't worked for Sterling in over twenty years."

Julian turned back to her, unzipping his leather briefcase and pulling out a leather-bound folio. He laid it flat on the counter and opened it to reveal a crisp, thick legal document stamped with a dark red wax seal.

"Your father did not ask for a loan, Miss Montgomery," Julian explained calmly. "Three days ago, realizing his financial ruin was imminent, Arthur Montgomery reached out to Master Grandfather Sterling—the patriarch of the family. Decades ago, your father performed a significant favor for the Sterling estate. Grandfather Sterling agreed to clear all debts, fund your father's medical care at the private St. Jude Medical Center, and secure your financial independence."

Chloe blinked, processing the overwhelming news. "In exchange for what? A family like Sterling doesn't give away hundreds of thousands of dollars out of nostalgia."

Julian’s lips thinned into a professional, unreadable line. "In exchange for a binding arrangement. The Sterling family requires a legal spouse for the eldest heir and acting CEO, Mr. Damian Sterling."

The room seemed to tilt beneath Chloe's feet. "A... a wife?"

"A proxy marriage," Julian corrected precisely. "Mr. Damian Sterling is currently stationed abroad, overseeing the conglomerate’s massive European expansion. However, under the explicit terms of his late grandfather’s trust mandate, he must be legally married before his twenty-ninth birthday to retain his voting rights on the corporate board and prevent a hostile takeover by rival faction members."

Julian pushed a sleek gold fountain pen across the marble counter toward her.

"The terms are simple," Julian continued. "You will sign the proxy marriage certificate today. You will legally become Mrs. Chloe Sterling. You will receive a monthly allowance of fifty thousand dollars, full medical coverage for your father, and complete protection under the Sterling name. In return, you will reside quietly, maintain discretion, avoid public scandals, and act as a paper wife until the contract period expires in two years."

Chloe stared at the document. Her hand trembled as she looked down at the bold print at the top:CONTRACT OF PROXY MARRIAGE & LEGAL UNION.

"And... Damian Sterling?" Chloe asked, her voice barely a whisper. "Does he know about this?"

"Mr. Sterling is aware of his grandfather's mandate," Julian said smoothly, though a subtle flicker of something guarded passed through his eyes. "He is a pragmatic businessman. He cares only that the legal requirements are met so he can secure his CEO appointment upon his return. You will likely never even meet him in person."

A ghost husband.A man who lived thousands of miles away, who wanted nothing from her except her signature on a piece of paper to satisfy corporate politics.

Chloe thought of her father lying in an ICU bed, monitor wires attached to his weak chest, crushed by the weight of debts he couldn't pay. She thought of her art studio, her freedom, and the terrifying men who had stood in this very room ten minutes ago.

This was a cage—a gilded, pristine cage—but it was a cage that would save her father's life.

With a trembling hand, Chloe picked up the gold fountain pen. She unscrewed the cap, touched the nib to the crisp parchment, and wrote her name across the dotted line:Chloe Montgomery.

Julian immediately pulled the document back, inspecting the ink with a satisfied nod. He blotted it dry, closed the leather folio, and offered her a brief, polite bow.

"Welcome to the family, Mrs. Sterling," Julian said softly. "A driver will pick you up tomorrow evening. There is a charity masquerade gala at the Grand Regent Hotel. As Mr. Sterling's legal wife, your presence is required to establish the validity of the marriage to the board. Keep your mask on, answer no questions from reporters, and remember: you are a shadow."

As Julian and his men walked out into the rain, leaving Chloe alone in the silent gallery, she looked down at her bare left hand.

She was twenty-three years old, completely broke, and legally married to a billionaire stranger she had never seen.

Chapter 2: The Masked Stranger

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was an opulent sea of shimmering crystal, vaulted ceilings, and tailored velvet. Soft orchestral music drifted from the raised balcony, weaving through the hum of hushed, multi-million-dollar conversations. Everywhere Chloe looked, the city’s elite moved with effortless confidence, clinking champagne flutes and wearing elaborate, jewel-encrusted masquerade masks that concealed as much as they revealed.

Chloe Montgomery adjusted the strap of her floor-length silk gown, her fingers trembling slightly. The dress was a midnight blue—a gift from Julian Vance, the lawyer who had arranged her proxy marriage contract only two days ago.

“You represent the Sterling name now,”Julian’s cool, measured voice echoed in her mind.“Even if Mr. Sterling is currently overseeing the European expansion and won't be attending, you are expected to make a discreet appearance at the annual charity gala. Keep your mask on, stay ou
