Chapter 1: A Surprised Smile

CASSIE POV:

I pushed my way through the door and into our bedroom. Maxwell was up now and on FaceTime with someone.

“Morning, babe,” I smiled cheerily as I walked over to him with the tray balanced in my hands.

He flashed me a surprised smile.

“Happy anniversary, baby,” I kissed him before setting the tray down on the bed.

“Aww. Thanks, love. I’ll just go brush before I devour all of this.. and happy anniversary to you too, my angel,” he kissed me back. I couldn’t love my husband any less.

While I waited for him to return from the bathroom, I couldn’t help taking a peek at his phone. He’d left it laying on the bed.

“Liv?” I frowned. Olivia was our friend —our oldest and closest. And she could be a little extra sometimes.

“Oh. Hey, hun,” she grinned through a mouthful of her breakfast.

I had to hold back a laugh at the picture.

“What are you wearing, Liv.. no, scratch that. What are you not wearing?” I laughed.

She was wearing a sports bra, her flying all over the place like a wild shrub. I could hear the sound of her hands clicking away at her laptop keyboard.

“It’s my house not a runway, dhurr,” she rolled her eyes playfully.

“Hey,” Max grinned as he planted a kiss at the back of my neck. I let him take the phone from my hands as I stood to let him get on the bed. “Liv? Cassie’s treating me to breakfast in bed for our anniversary. Isn’t that lovely?” he blew me an air kiss.

“I know I’m single you guys. You don’t have to rub it in my face,” Olivia joked.

I shook my head in laughter as I rose to leave the room. I had to clean up the kitchen after making a little mess. “Enjoy your breakfast, honey. And Liv, go get some clothes on and stop throwing your t*tt**s in my husband’s face,” I joked on my way out.

I returned to clear the tray a little later and Max was no longer on his call. The sound of running water from the bathroom gave away his location. I smiled as I picked up the tray—he’d cleared the plate.

I didn’t hear him come up behind me until he wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, leaving a trail of kisses on the base of my neck. I giggled in surprise and tried to wriggle free.

“You’re gonna be late for work, Max.”

“I work for myself, babe. Come on. A little something for the road,” he teased, nibbling at my ear softly with his lips.

“Okay when you return from work. I promise. We’ll do whatever you want. I need to take this away,” I broke free, an apologetic smile on my face.

“Yeah whatever,” he rolled his eyes playfully and walked off to the closet.

While Max was away at work, I got busy. I poured my heart into preparing a little feast for our anniversary. I went out to a department store to get some items for decorating and let YouTube be my guide. It all turned just perfect.

I recalled the incident from the morning and felt a sense of guilt for denying Max a little pleasure. I’d been feeling a little out of sorts lately. And then I got the brightest idea. I dashed out of the house again to a lingerie shop and picked the most interesting lace underwear I could find. When I returned home, I went straight to the bathroom and soaked myself in the nicest scented soaps I had.

Afterwards, I put on the lingerie and threw a robe over it. I went through the decorations and set the table again to perfection before sitting back to admire my work. I looked up to the clock moments later and realized it was way past closing hours and Max was yet to return.

I picked up my phone and dialed his number but it went straight to voicemail. I tried calling Olivia but she wasn’t answering either. I looked at the dishes laid out on the table, growing cold as the seconds ticked away and felt my spirit dampen as well.

And then it struck me. What if I took the party to his office?

“You are such a genius, Cassie,” I smiled to myself in pride.

I quickly dashed into the closet and took out a nice dress that was barely there and threw a giant fur coat over it. I made a quick stop at the wine cellar on my way out and picked out Max’s favorite wine before dashing out of the house.

I drove with unbridled excitement to Max’s fintech company and ran down to the entrance. The receptionist jerked up in alert as I entered.

“Hello. I’m here to see Max. Is he in?” I smiled, walking towards the elevator while I spoke. I wasn’t a new face around.

“Mrs. Banks… Umm yeah. Uhh he’s just umm… I think he mentioned he was kinda busy..” she stuttered.

“It’s all good, honey. I’ll just go up and meet him,” I said with a wink as the elevator doors closed.

I danced from foot to foot barely able to contain my excitement. I gripped the neck of the wine bottle tighter, my lips curling in a smile as I pictured the surprise on Max’s face when he’d see me.

I got out of the elevator and walked up to the door of Max’s office. I let the cot slide down my shoulders a bit to reveal my bare shoulders and cleavage. Then I gently pushed the door open.

“Tada!” I announced my entrance with a circus magician’s flourish.

Max looked surprised to see me—but not in the way that I’d expected.

“What are you doing here?” he asked with a frown. He slowly set the gods of wine he’d been drinking down on the desk. “Why didn’t you call before coming, Cassie?” he let out an exasperated sigh.

“I’m sorry, love. I just wanted to surprise you for our anniversary… Did I come at a bad time?” I asked, my face reddening in embarrassment. “You were taking too long to return from work and the food I made was getting cold and I put up some balloons and ribbons , flowers and even candles and I was just…”

“Oh come on, Cassandra. It’s just a marriage anniversary. Nothing special,” Max snapped in disgust.

I was stunned to silence. What was I missing?

As if only really looking for the first time, I noticed the details that didn’t seem right. Max never drank while working. There was an almost empty bottle of wine by his foot alongside an empty glass of wine. Was there someone else in the room?

I looked around in confusion and realized the desk was bare of everything that should have been there. Two laptops were sitting on the floor beside the desk and bits of paperwork lay strewn across the floor in a mess.

Max had his shirt undone. My prim and proper husband who loved to be stylish even if he was just going out for a walk.

Then came the sound that deepened my fears—someone flushed the toilet. There was someone else in the room after all!

I looked up at the toilet door as it slowly swung open. My heart sank to the floor as Olivia walked out, her shirt undone to reveal her bra while her skirt was missing.

I felt the bottle of wine slip from my hand and land to the floor with a loud crash, shards of glass flying around my feet.

Chapter 2: Bluntness Words

CASSIE POV:

“L-Liv? H-how..” the words trailed out of my mouth before I could realize. I blinked hard in disbelief and denial, willing for everything to be a trick of my eyes, a figment of my imagination. But when everything stayed just the same, I felt the tears as they rolled down my cheeks.

“Oh my God. Cassie.. I’m sorry you had to see this…” Liv began in apology once she’d finally recovered from the shock.

“Sorry?” I cut her off, my heart heavy with bitterness and anger. I turned to Max who had an air of indifference about him. “Are you sorry too?” I asked, my vision blurring from the tears.

He let out a sigh and brought his legs down from the desk, reaching out for the bottle of wine as he did so. “Liv, I told you we should have locked the door,” he sighed disinterestedly.

I was stunned by the bluntness of his words.

“Did I just hear right?” I wondered to myself.

“Don’t spin this on me, Max. I made sure everyone had left the building an
